Mr. Hanes directs the firm’s Winston-Salem office and is involved in the formulation of the firm’s investment strategy, portfolio management, and business development. Prior to joining Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc. in 1981, he was associated with the investment banking firm of Dean Witter Reynolds, Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Active in community affairs, Mr. Hanes serves on numerous Boards. A partial list includes the following: Chairman of the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation; Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Old Salem, Inc.; Member of the Chancellor’s Philanthropic Council for the University of North Carolina; Member and past Chairman of UNC Friends of the Library Board; member of The Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center; Past Trustee of the North Carolina Museum of Art; Trustee of LibForAll Foundation; past Chairman of the Board of SECCA. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in June of 2011. This is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina. Mr. Hanes holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he received in 1967. Subsequent to his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a 1st Lieutenant of Infantry.
